BENDING LINES IN SHOW JUMPING: HOW TO MEASURE AND RIDE THE ARC

A bending line is where clean rounds quietly fall apart. The distance walks one way on the diagram and rides another way on the curve, and riders who treat it like a straight line arrive at the second jump half a stride wrong with nowhere to put it.

The fix is understanding what a bending line actually measures, walking it along the track you will ride, and deciding between the options it hands you before you ever turn to the first fence.

What is a bending line in show jumping?

A bending line is two jumps set on a related distance where the track between them is a curve rather than a straight line. The second fence is offset from the direct extension of the first, so the rider has to choose a track, and the number of strides depends entirely on the track chosen. A straight related distance has one answer; a bending line has options, and that is the whole point of it.

Course designers build them to test whether a rider can pick a track and hold it. The horse that wanders across the arc turns a fair question into a run-out, and the rider who commits turns the same line into the easiest question on course.

Why do you measure a bending line along the arc?

Because the horse travels the curve you ride, not the straight line between the two jumps. Point-to-point measurement gives you a number the horse never actually covers, which is why two riders can walk the same line and honestly report different distances. The standard stride math still applies - 12 ft (3.7 m) strides plus 6 ft (1.8 m) each for landing and takeoff - but it applies to the length of the curved track, not the chord across it.

A set of jumps that measures 66 ft (20.1 m) straight across can measure 72 ft (21.9 m) along a comfortable arc. That is the difference between an awkward half stride and a clean, quiet five, and it lives entirely in the track you choose to ride.

The half-stride trap

A distance that walks in a half stride is the single most common reason a bending line rides badly. On a straight line you are stuck with it, but on a bend you can add feet by bulging out or remove them by straightening, until the arc walks in a whole number. Read the half stride on the walk and you have already solved it.

How do you walk a bending line on foot, in order?

Walk the arc you plan to ride, counting in the same 3 ft (0.9 m) steps you use on a straight line. The routine is fixed so the number is repeatable, and you leave the walk holding two counts instead of one.

  1. Start 6 ft (1.8 m) out from the center of the first jump, on the landing side.
  2. Follow the curve you intend to ride, staying out on the arc rather than cutting straight across it.
  3. Count 4 steps to a stride, exactly as you would on a straight related distance.
  4. Finish 6 ft (1.8 m) before the center of the second jump, on the takeoff side.
  5. Walk it a second time on the tighter track and note both stride counts before you decide.

Now you are holding two honest numbers for the same pair of jumps - the quiet count on the outside arc and the forward count on the direct track - and the ride becomes a choice instead of a surprise.

How do you add or remove a stride on a bending line?

You change the shape of the arc, not the pace of the canter. Bulging the track outward lengthens it and adds a stride; straightening toward the chord shortens it and removes one. This is the tool a bending line gives you that a straight distance does not, and it is why a half-stride distance is never a trap on a bend.

Bulge out to add, straighten to subtract

If the direct track walks in a half stride, do not fight it - bend out until the arc walks in a whole number, and ride that track with your outside aids so the horse holds the curve. To leave a stride out in a jump-off, straighten toward the chord from the moment you land, which shortens the track and lets the forward number ride itself.

On a bending line you do not ride the distance you are given, you choose it.

How do you choose between the direct track and the bending track?

The direct track is shorter and saves time, while the bending track gives the horse a better look at the second jump and an easier balance. Decide before you turn to the first fence, using the horse and the situation rather than instinct in the moment:

The last row is the one riders skip. If the direct track walks in a half stride, the bend is not a compromise, it is where the clean distance actually lives.

Why do bending lines cause so many rails and run-outs?

Because most faults on a bend come from a track that was never chosen, not from a distance that could not be ridden. Four failures cause almost all of them:

  • The rider commits to no track. Half direct and half bend produces a distance that matches neither walk. Pick the track before you turn to the first jump.
  • The horse drifts on the arc. A drift outward adds feet and a cut inward removes them, so ride the line with your outside aids rather than hope.
  • The count was done point to point. The measured distance was never the distance the horse traveled.
  • The curve dies mid-line. Riders start on the bend and straighten early, arriving on the exact half stride they were trying to avoid.
